PLAYTOWER

The Giant’s young visitors can burn off their excess energy at the south end of the garden where the playtower and playground are. The playtower fosters the widest range of play experiences on four different levels arranged on top of each other. The levels are connected by a unique vertical net that can be climbed up to a height of just over 14 meters. It offers the most varied activities from climbing, rocking, and swinging to sliding and even to what looks like floating.

The façades of the tower, designed by architecture firm Snøhetta, consist of 160 crystalline facets, though no two are exactly alike. The panes are imprinted with an innovative pattern of millions of tiny animal motifs. The view from inside to outside is visible at all times, just like the activities on the inside can always be seen from the outside, and at night, the structure is a spectacular body of light.

Typically, Snøhetta’s projects are not defined by their visual appearance, but rather the effect of the building structure or of the space on the visitor. Among its many awards and distinctions, Snøhetta was the recipient of the 2009 Mies van der Rohe Award for European Architecture.
