James Turrelldraws us into a world of light and color with his Shallow Spaces. Through precise design, he transforms the enclosed space into a physical experience that expands our visual perception. Flowing transitions between special color combinations and light intensities dissolve the boundaries of the room and create an atmosphere of contemplation. Immerse yourself and give free rein to your emotions. The Shallow Space UMBRA 2022 is currently the only permanent installation of this type by James Turrell in the German-speaking region. When entering the light room, please keep to the designated area and do not step onto the platform.
The American artist James Turrell was born in Los Angeles, USA, in 1943. He is considered a pioneer of light art and a master of light. For over 50 years, he has been experimenting with natural and artificial light sources to make the medium physically tangible. His “Shallow Space Constructions” are particularly well-known as enclosed spaces offering intense experiences of light and color. Turrell’s life’s work is the Roden Crater, an extinct volcano in Arizona that has been transformed into an observatory with an underground system of rooms and openings, where visitors can experience celestial phenomena in a completely new way.
