The darkened room in this video installation is illuminated only by the diva’s magnificence; nothing distracts visitors from her voice and glamorous appearance. The exhibit celebrates the spectacular performance of an exceptional artist with the perfect synchronization of image and sound.
Jessye Norman’s original video recording is the focus, highlighted by a studio-recorded soundtrack of the aria “Thy hand, Belinda” from Henry Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas”. A one-ton crystal from the mountains of Madagascar lies at the diva’s feet. The audience can touch it, and many feel a palpable energy being released from it.
American opera singer Jessye Norman was born in Georgia in 1945 and died in New York on September 30, 2019. She was a world-renowned soprano and one of the most prominent voices of the 20th century.
